The French just aren’t that fussed about Dunkirk. Not now, not in 1940. They’re not being pissy, it just comprises such a small part of the unfolding catastrophe and defeat of May-June 1940, that they have a huge amount of ground to cover. Today, I wanted to take an area familiar to people from 1914-1918, and parachute you into a snapshot of the battle for France in 1940 as it appeared for ordinary French men, women and children…
