When Case Yellow, the German invasion of Belgium began in 1940, within a few days, the town of Louvain (Leuven) found itself on the British front line. This photo is reportedly from 15th May and shows men of the BEF manning a gun emplacement between two ruined buildings. The Germans assaulted the town from 14th to 16th, when the British pulled back to the Senne.

This photo of an elderly pair of refugees fleeing Louvain in 1940 made me start thinking about what else they probably saw…
