First off, many, MANY of the most outlandish homes that Manhattan had to offer are now gone. At one point there was a craze for these neo-classical mansions made to look like ancient temples. The guilty parties that kicked off this fashion included Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Latrobe and NYC was proud as punch.
The Greek Palace (pictured above) was designed by A. J. Davis for the super-rich ship builder John Cox Stevens and it was built in about 1849 near Murray Street and West Broadway. One appraisal bragged that: “The Palais Bourbon in Paris, Buckingham Palace in London… are little grander than this residence of a simple citizen of our Republican city.’
