Children’s lives in the first half of the Twentieth Century were impacted by war in thousands of ways. These are just a few photos, and I warn you, you will find some of them distressing, but I think it’s important to remember all victims of war, not just combatants. Because if images like this don't teach us to do better, nothing will.
Some children had to live as the war played out around them. This girl has lived under German occupation in Valenciennes, probably for most of the life that she can remember. In this picture, she’s holding hands with two Canadian soldiers just after the town has been liberated in 1918.
