I love the fact that people have begun suggesting ideas for content. One of my readers waved the words “soldier of fortune” at me, and inevitably I caved. Herewith the story of an absolute maniac who fought wars on three continents. This one’s for you, Jim.

The story of Caryl ap Rhys Pryce starts way out on the Bay of Bengal at Vizianagaram and way back in 1876. His birth coincides almost exactly with Queen Victoria picking up the title of Empress of India, and his father had a long career in the Indian Army. Whilst dad was off spending half a century in uniform, however, Caryl spent his childhood largely in Scotland with his mother and siblings. His brother Henry would go off on a more traditional (boring) career trajectory, becoming a General in India.
