Never knew there was a Korean musical version of Ben Hur. I am so going to look out for that. Great article Alex.

As I often say every day is a school day. I knew the basics about Wallace but not the details. There is a BBC radio adaptation of the book, quite good as I recall. I have not read the book however I did read Gone With the Wind many years ago, much better than the epic movie. Great article Alex.

Wow!! Loved the exploration of Lewis Wallace’s background, his “transgression” at the Battle of Shiloh and how Lew is part of Ben Hur!! Adds a valuable perspective to the 50’s movie. Thank you, Alex!!!

Now when I watch Ben Hur again, I'll have a different perspective on it. Great article Alex.

I’ll admit it - I’ve never seen Ben Hur. But based on Alex’s treatment, I will tonight.

The piece about Leslie Nielsen? He was considered a leading man before doing comedic roles. He was, for example, a proto James Kirk in Forbidden Planet. More likely the reason he could not have done Ben Hur was because of his bow legs.

Great piece! I didn’t know very much of that. I lived on the 17th floor of a 22 story building in Los Angeles or Charlton Heston had a penthouse. I never ran into the guy because, the penthouse has own private elevator…..;)

Alex, this is a fantastic read. Unlike Trevor, I will not be tracking down the Korean musical (though if there’s a DVD it’s likely in my daughter’s collection 😂) but I will rewatch the film with new insights. Thank you 😊

Great read, I always enjoy & try to watch the film when it’s on… A friend who is a teacher, (RE) used clips to illustrate in a lesson - the kids reaction was to be confused- the strange technicolour quality of the film the shiny body’s, all the men look around 53 years old - the kids wanted to know if they were real people, & not made of plastic, it didn’t compute …. Kids …. I remember when all this was fields!

A great article, I wasn't aware of the book's history but the epic surrounding the making of the movie is legendary. Thank you.

Thanks Alex! Great read with some American history thrown in. We watched Ben Hur growing up. Always on TV around Easter.

This is really great. I'm sure you already know but the stories surrounding the 1925 version are wild.

They got so fed up trying to get a script ready for the 50s thay I think they actually brought in someone who’d worked on the 1925 version
